Whether your horse is used for high level showing, trail riding, or pleasure, we are committed to being a part of your team to help your horse reach its potential. Sports medicine involves evaluation of the whole horse, from musculoskeletal soundness to upper airway evaluation to cardiovascular health. We use a systematic approach to lameness diagnosis, observing your horse in hand, on the lunge line, or under saddle as necessary. A combination of diagnostic nerve blocks, joint blocks, and imaging may be used to diagnose the cause of your horse's soreness. Based on these diagnostics, we can formulate a treatment plan that best fits your horse.
Properly performed dentistry can improve your horse's overall health and performance. Our goal is to improve comfort by removing sharp points and loose teeth which will help maximize nutrition, acceptance of the bit, and prevent problems down the road. War Equine offers full dental care for your equine athlete, including routine floats as well as treatments for more extensive problems, such as extractions. Floats begin with sedation and a thorough oral exam. The exam is the cornerstone of equine dentistry. By visually assessing the mouth, it’s possible to determine which treatments are necessary to keep your horse at its peak performance.
Preventative care is key to good health and the best way to have a long, happy partnership with your horse. A veterinarian should see your animal at least once a year in order to become familiar with your animal and be able to detect subtle health changes. This also gives us an opportunity to provide you with information about nutrition, shoeing, and exercise. Customized vaccination and deworming programs may be designed to suit your horse and their life stage, activity level, and health.
The ultimate goal of our veterinary team is to provide your animal with the care it needs. Sometimes, that entails surgery. We offer a variety of elective surgeries including castrations, laceration repair, enucleations, and mass removals. For more advanced surgeries that require general anesthesia, we will facilitate a referral to best accommodate you and your horse.
War Equine is pleased to offer emergency services for established clients within a 30-mile radius. For emergencies occurring after hours, please call our practice directly. Haul-in emergencies are available for clients who are outside of our regular ambulatory area or for those who would prefer to trailer their horse to our clinic. We do not have the ability to hospitalize patients overnight at this time. In the event we are unavailable due to being a one doctor practice, we will help direct you to get the care you need!
Prepurchase examinations are recommended for any new horse. A prepurchase exam provides the buyer with an opinion of the horse's condition, based on the day of examination. A full prepurchase examination involves a full physical examination (eyes, heart, lungs, body condition) and soundness evaluation. Flexion tests will be performed to identify potential areas of lameness. Radiographs may be recommended depending on the results of flexion tests, the horse's history and intended use. Additional tests may include bloodwork, fecal test, or a breeding soundness examination.
